The BCY Tiger Sharks Swim Team

last update 6/18/13

Highlights

Thanks to all the parents that were able to attend Monday night's parent meeting. Just in case you weren't able to make it click here for the information that was discussed. (6/18)

Don't forget to sign-up by Wednesday 6/19 for Saturday's TVSC Dual Meet for all swimmers. All swimmers must use the active.com link (see meet sign-up link at right or link on meet page) to say "yes" they will attend the meet or "no" they will not. Having this information by the deadline allows coaches to place swimmers in their events as well as create relay teams with swimmers that have confirmed that they will be in attendance. (6/18)

Team suits order through Blazin' will be in on Thursday for distribution. Any suits not picked up will be brought to the dual meet on Saturday. Team caps will be distributed on Saturday. (6/18)

Invite your friends and family to support The BCY Tiger Sharks on Sunday, July 14 for our team fundraiser at The Winners Circle (at Route 30 & 100 in The Whiteland Towne Center in Exton). The team will receive 20% of your entire food purchase when our team invitation is presented to the server. Click here to download  the team invitation to  print, email to your friends and family and to post on your Facebook page today! (6/18)

Sign-ups are now available for the 6/30 BCY Distance Meet for swimmers 12 & Up. Swimmers under 12 may participate ONLY if they DO NOT participate in 7/13's Mini Meet and with coaches' permission. The entry deadline is 6/25. (updated 6/18)

Gently Used Book Collection: On June 30th the Brandywine YMCA will be collaborate with the Chester County Food Bank and Gateway Church for our 3rd annual Feed and Read event in Ash Park. We will be doing a cookout for the community and handing out books to the kids for the summer! Studies show that kids in low income areas fall behind kids in middle class areas two grades by the time they reach the 5th grade due to loss of learning during the summer. They don’t have books to read or the resources to take family trip to museums and educational landmarks etc. Last year we served over 500 people and handed out over 3000 books to the kids. It is such a rewarding feeling seeing a child get so excited to get some books to take home. Please give any gently used elementary and middle school level children’s book that you don’t need anymore to Coach Jenne by 6/26/13. (6/18)

A few BCY swim blankets, nylon waterproof back and gold fleece front (perfect for summer swim meets!) are available for $20 each. If you are interested in making a purchase please contact Caroline Duncan. (6/18)

With our ongoing support for our community with SPLASH WEEK, June 17th - 21st the following changes are in effect for our Swim Team practices:

Thank you for your support as we continue to educate water safety to the children of our community. SPLASH is a free lesson program for community children, if you are interested please contact Kristy Cornman at kcornman@ymcabwv.org for more information. (6/13)

The July PAC Meeting will be held on Thursday 7/11 at 6pm in the upstairs conference at the Y. All parents are encouraged to attend! Everyone with a swimmer on the team is a member of the PAC, which supports our team and coaches by providing parent volunteers to help run meets and create a positive environment for all swimmers. The PAC helps enable the team to function within the realm of the YMCA, USA, and the Brandywine Swim Leagues. This Committee is organized by a board of volunteer PAC members who meet the first Thursday of every month at 6:00pm in the Y's conference room. Current board members have swimmers from ages 7 through 15 on the team. Any swim parents who have suggestions and ideas to share are encouraged to attend and consider joining the board. (6/7)

Mark your calendars for the End of Season Potluck Party at the outdoor pool and pavilion on Sunday 7/21 at 5pm to celebrate the end of the Summer Swim Season and rev up for BSL Championships! RSVP and sign-up to bring an item to share today! (6/7)

Sign-ups are now available for snack bar donations (see link at right or link on meet page). Donated items will be sold at our home swim meets. 100% of the funds raised are used to benefit the swim team. (6/7)

Sign-ups are now available for meet workers (see link at right or link on meet page). Parent volunteers are a vital part of making our home and away meets a success. Experienced and new volunteers are welcome - there is an opportunity for everyone to support our swimmers and coaches. (6/7)

Just a quick note regarding the use of the glass doors at the far end of the pool near the Aquatic Office. Please do not use these doors except in the case of emergency. The regular opening and closing of these doors has become a safety concern as guests and non-members have been witnessed coming into the pool area without having checked in at the front desk. What has happened is that when a non-staff person is coming out those glass doors and another person is trying to come in them, the non-staff person simply lets them pass into the pool area. As we are responsible for the safety and security of many hundreds of children daily, we can not continue to let this happen. In light of the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, it is all to obvious that secured entry into areas that the community deems safe is of the utmost concern. As much as it is an inconvenience for members to have to exit “the long way” (via the locker rooms), this small addition to our overall safety and risk management plan is necessary. There are three circumstances whereby you might witness traffic through this doorway:

1) In the event of an emergency, it might be deemed safest to use that as an exit.

2) During a swim meet where additional staff and volunteers are on hand, we will remove this restriction to ease the traffic patterns.

3) From time to time you might witness YMCA staff moving through this doorway. They are held responsible for safety at all points of entry and are held accountable for not allowing anyone to pass through these doors when they are heading to the Y administrative areas. Our expectation is that they will maintain a safe aquatic environment for you and your family.

Thank you for adhering to this policy. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Beth Maday, Associate Executive Director Brandywine YMCA at 610-380-9622 ext. 2463 or bmaday@ymcabwv.org. (6/7)

This year for the Annual Good Kid’s campaign we have created our own Aquatics Team to help fundraise. Our team captain is Kate Furcon and with the help of Kate, Jill, Carolina, Kim and Kristin we were already able to raise over $500 at the phon-a-thon last month. If you would like to donate to the Aquatics Team Good Kid’s Campaign please click on the link below. If each swim team family donates $10.00 our aquatics team can raise well over $1000. Any donation amount will be greatly appreciated by the YMCA families in need. If you have questions about the Good Kid’s Donation please feel free to email Kristy Cornman at kcornman@ymcabwv.org. If you do decide to donate make sure to follow the directions below so that our team gets credit for the donation. (4/4)
